As the avatar of the player’s choosing navigates through a city landscape, the character fights off so-called Internet trolls, Russian AI bots, Cyber Ninjas, MAGA Margie, Lizard People, and a bare-chested Russian President Vladimir Putin drawn from today's political landscape.
Orange County and Santa Ana local government members were featured as guest speakers at an event launching a new online video game appearing to spread propaganda against conservative voters and controversial international figures.
Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento of District 2 and Santa Ana City Councilmember Johnathan Hernandez were slated as speakers for the kick-off event, which was held on July 27th at El Barco in Santa Ana, California, according to Spark OC.
“Great event this weekend celebrating the launch of VOTOS LOCOS, a video game created to inspire first time and disenfranchised voters to participate in the electoral process,” Sarmiento said on social media.
Councilmember Hernandez also shared on social media he attended the event.
"VOTOS LOCOS" is a vintage arcade-style role-playing game designed to encourage first-time and disenfranchised voters to participate in the voting process.
“We are creating a social justice video game, VOTOS LOCOS, to promote voting in the US!,” Pocha Peña, one of two artists who designed the game, wrote on social media.
Peña and co-creator Victor Payan are award-winning artists based in Santa Ana who promoted the game on the Creative Capital project “Dreamocracy in America,” which also urged California residents to vote against the recall effort of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The free online video game guides players through four main objectives: registering to vote, attending a rally, canvassing with a candidate, and casting a ballot.
The project is allegedly part of the CA Creative Corps, a state arts program supported by the California Arts Council and administered by Community Partners, and The City of Santa Ana Investing in the Artist Grant.
Local organizations were invited to use VOTOS LOCOS in voter outreach efforts in Orange County and across the country.
